About AYUSH Vibhag, Himachal Pradesh

Initially, the Department of Health & Family Welfare was responsible for the management of all institutions of Ayurveda in the State, along with the Allopathic system of medicine. Recognizing the popularity and effectiveness of the Indian Systems of Medicine, the Government of Himachal Pradesh established a separate Department of Ayurveda on 7th November 1984, as per the Rules of Business, by bifurcating it from the Department of Health & Family Welfare.

Over the years, this Department has expanded its scope and activities significantly. It now functions as the Department of AYUSH, in alignment with the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, focusing on the development and promotion of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Sowa Rigpa, and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) systems in the State.

The Department plays a vital role in providing quality healthcare services through a network of AYUSH institutions, including Ayurvedic Health Centres, Homoeopathic Health Centers, Unani Health Centers, and Ayurvedic Hospitals across Himachal Pradesh. It also emphasizes preventive and promotive healthcare through yoga and wellness initiatives.

In recent years, the Department has taken several progressive steps such as:

  • Implementation of the National AYUSH Mission (NAM) for strengthening infrastructure, human resources, and quality AYUSH health care delivery.
  • Integration of AYUSH services with the mainstream health care system under Ayushman Arogya Mandirs Health & Wellness Centres.
  • Promotion of AYUSH-based preventive healthcare and lifestyle practices, including yoga and wellness programs at the community level.

Today, the Department of AYUSH, Himachal Pradesh, continues to uphold the traditional wisdom of Indian medicine while integrating modern approaches to ensure holistic, accessible, and affordable healthcare for all citizens of the State.
